Description

This live in-house course provides an update and practical refresher on JCQ access arrangements for the 2026-27 academic year.

The session will cover:

  • the current JCQ position for 2026-27, including relevant updates and supplementary guidance

  • establishing and evidencing a candidate's normal way of working

  • strengthening centre evidence, including teacher feedback, student voice and evidence from internal tests and mock examinations

  • making and recording decisions about access arrangements

  • consideration of supervised rest breaks before 25% extra time where appropriate

  • evidencing and recording 25% extra time

  • centre-delegated arrangements and more complex cases

  • EAL and access arrangements

  • short-term conditions and temporary difficulties

  • preparing for JCQ access arrangements inspections and ensuring that the candidate's evidence tells a clear and coherent story

Practical examples and case scenarios will be used throughout to support delegates in applying the regulations to their own settings.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • identify the key JCQ access arrangements requirements relevant to the 2026-27 academic year

  • explain the importance of normal way of working and appropriate centre evidence when making access arrangements decisions

  • identify suitable evidence to support commonly used access arrangements, including 25% extra time

  • recognise the importance of considering supervised rest breaks before extra time where appropriate

  • make and record access arrangements decisions using evidence from different sources

  • identify potential weaknesses or gaps in a candidate's evidence

  • distinguish between centre-delegated arrangements and arrangements requiring an application through Access Arrangements Online

  • apply relevant JCQ requirements to practical candidate scenarios

Course prerequisites

This is a closed, in-house event.
The course is intended for GCST staff involved in the access arrangements process, including SENCOs, specialist assessors, access arrangements coordinators and examinations staff. Some prior familiarity with JCQ access arrangements procedures is helpful.
