PASS theory: How to better understand cognitive abilities of diverse learners - Dr Tulio Otero - 05 Apr 2025 to 31 Mar 2026: Patoss

Overview

Description

For traditional measures of ability recent research does not support interpretations at the scale or subtest level. In this session cognitive ability will be examined within the PASS theory of intelligence, the neuropsychological underpinnings of the processes will be reviewed, and then PASS processes are considered within the context of fair and equitable assessment of diverse learners. Case studies displaying testing results of several different types of learners with different learning concerns will be presented. Additionally, each case contains results form traditional tests of ability, and PASS profiles. This will allow the participants to observe the unique contributions that the PASS lens provides, in contrast to other popular measures of cognitive ability, in understanding why a student may be experiencing behaviour and academic challenges.

Learning outcomes

  • Analyse Cognitive Ability Assessment – Participants will evaluate the strengths and limitations of traditional cognitive ability measures and their interpretation at the scale and subtest levels.

  • Understand PASS Theory and Neuropsychology – Participants will explain the neuropsychological foundations of the PASS theory of intelligence and how its processes (Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive) contribute to cognitive assessment.

  • Apply PASS Theory to Diverse Learners – Participants will interpret case study data, comparing traditional ability tests with PASS profiles, to assess how the PASS framework provides a fair and equitable understanding of diverse learners' academic and behavioral challenges.
