This one-hour session provides a practical overview of assistive technology within the context of JCQ access arrangements.
Content includes:
- An overview of assistive technology and its role in supporting access to examinations
- The JCQ regulations governing the use of assistive technology
- Key differences between assistive technology and human support (e.g. readers and scribes)
- Detailed guidance on specific technologies:
- Examination reading pens
- Computer readers (text-to-speech)
- Screen readers
- Word processors (including use as a scribe alternative)
- Speech recognition technology (speech-to-text)
- Evidence requirements and approval processes (Form 8, Form 9, Form 8RF)
- Considerations for use in exams testing reading and exams carrying SPAG marks
- Practical implementation, including training, set-up, and troubleshooting
Real examples and learner/SENCo reflections are used throughout to illustrate the impact of assistive technology on independence, confidence, and exam access.
