Course summary
Why this course?
Memory matters. Whether phonological memory, verbal working memory, or visual working memory — our ability to understand and assess memory is fundamental to accurate, evidence-based dyslexia assessment.
In this training, Jen McDermott (SASC Director, independent SpLD consultant, member of the 2025 Report Format Working Group) will take you beyond the test scores, helping you explore memory in depth and connect findings to real-world impact.
This isn’t just about definitions and numbers — it’s about making sense of memory for the learner, and writing it up clearly for non-specialists.

Description
Memory matters. Whether it’s phonological, verbal working memory or visual working memory, the way we understand and assess memory plays a critical role in identifying dyslexia and other SpLDs. Jen will explore our understanding of the different memory terms, the tools assessors can use to measure performance, and the potential impact of any observed weakness. There will be an opportunity to reflect on how this important area of assessment can be effectively communicated to non-specialists, where accessibility and readability are key.
